  • I used to have a Great Dane. We tried to use harnesses but he would pull so hard that he’s given my father injuries in his shoulder. But that’s not the harnesses fault BamBam is just very hardheaded, we even tried choke collars at one point but we had to stop because he was too stubborn. He eventually snapped his collar one day and decided not to come home. I feel nothing but regret every time I think of it because he looked me in the face as if playfully daring me to chase him but I was so mad at him I still drove off and left him outside. He would usually come back when he heard the car pull up in the driveway but never again

There were multiple times that people had their dogs off of a leash and had gone to attack my dog and in an emergency situation all I had to do was pull up on the harness to put my dog in my arms and out of the way of the attack without fear that I would choke my dog.

  • If it works for your dog then great if not try something different! What I did when my dog was too small I made sure to keep a steady and slowish walk and keep the lead loose and if he went in the wrong way or went too far I just gave him I little pull to let him know I didn’t want him there. It worked like a charm for me so if pulling is an issue I recommend giving your dog I little pull to slow them down or change their direction

  • No, harnesses ARE harmful and DO cause pulling. You are also WAY more likely to lose control of your dog if they are on a harness.

    Luke WalsteadLuke Walstead24 päivää sitten
  • When someone is concerned about a dog pulling in a harness it’s because the dog is already large and strong and has a history of pulling and not listening to the handler. In those cases, yes, you’re wasting your time with a harness (that hooks in the back) because it’s so easy for the dog to get in front and forget about the handler they are already used to ignoring. Just telling that person a truism that harnesses don’t cause pulling is irrelevant, dumb, not constructive and generally useless and unhelpful.

  • As a dog trainer, no. The harness, being on the chest only propels the dog to pull. A simple leash at the top of the neck and waiting for the dog to be calm before going out is better.

    Skarlet FDSkarlet FD28 päivää sitten
  • This is incorrect. Once your dog is trained and I mean well trained, you can safely use a harness. You should also never use a nylon collar to walk your dog either. It is extremely hard on the neck. I have my preferences depending on which dog I'm walking, small or lg but I would never use a harness to walk my large dog. He wears a working dog harness but I would not hook it to the leash. He wears 3 collars and only one is hooked to the leash. He ONLY wears these collars when we leave the property. Otherwise, he's naykee. If you insist on walking your dog in a harness, it is essential you teach them "with me" or any command to indicate to them to walk by your side. Then it doesn't matter what they're hooked to. Last no no, never ever ever walk your dog on a flexi lead. They are extremely dangerous for you and your dog. They were invented for lazy people who want their dog to exercise itself

  • a harness gives them more control and strength. if you have a dog that is bad on walks, tugging, pulling, it may be best to use a collar. (from personal experience)

    JulietJuliet29 päivää sitten
    • absolutely not lmfao? a harness doesnt give them more control whatsoever, it gives YOU more control. simply pulling on their throat does nothing, you need to have prior training regardless

  • I've read that harnesses can reinforce pulling because dogs have this thing in their chest and when pressure is applied to it, it makes them want to pull more. Idk how to explain it but I've heard a few trainers talk about it. I guess it depends on the dog though.

  • yes, the dog equipment itself will not CAUSE pulling. but normal harnesses (not the front attach kind) were MADE to help dogs to pull. yes it can “save their throat” but so can a prong, a slip lead, or an e-collar. there are many different ways to teach your dog to walk nicely next to you and a harness is the last one ill choose but it can work. i’d only use one AFTER the dog is trained to walk nicely.

  • Harnesses doesn't cause pulling, it only makes it more comfortable for dogs to pull, since its not choking them. To prevent pulling whilst using a harness, you can either get one that has a hook in the front for the leash/lead or you can buy a Gentle lead, which is an extra harness that goes over the dog's snout, and no it's not uncomfortable to them, no its not a muzzle, yes they can still bark, open their mouth, drink and eat etc.
